Principles of construction

In a single operation twisted or round cross bars are pressed into solid bearing bars under high pressure and at the same time are fully electrically welded.

High Strength

Through the homogeneous welding of all intersections by the resistance welding process gratings of high stability, maximum strength and optimum load distribution are produced.

Section Stability

The special construction features of forge-welded gratings provide incomparable resistance to twisting and bending distortion. Even when cut-outs have been made later (which very often cannot be avoided during erection), stability is maintained to a high degree.


The gratings are banded at all sides. Banding are equal to bearing bar size (for automatic welding of the banding bar it has to have two stiffening corrugations).

The gratings are either produced having plain bearing bars or machine serrated bearing bars.

Length = direction of bearing bars (span)
Width = direction of cross bars (standard panel width being 1000mm)
Size of grating = 800x1000mm

Glossary of terms

Load Bearing Bar

A longitudinal load-carrying section spanning between supports

Transverse Bar

A member fixed at right angles to the load-bearing bars to provide lateral restraint


The distance centre-to-centre of load-bearing bars or centre-to-centre of transverse bars

Bearing Bar

A bar or section of at least equal thickness to the load-bearing bars, fixed to the edge or a flooring panel flush with the top of the load-bearing bars.

Deep Binding Bar

A bar or section fixed to the edge of a flooring panel and projecting below the underside


(Direction of span) The overall dimension of a flooring panel parallel with the load-bearing bars. (This dimension is always referred to as ‘length’, even if it is shorter than the width).

Curb Angle

A member fixed to concrete or supporting steelwork at the perimeter of a flooring area

Toe Plate (Kicking plate)

A flat bar around a cut-out or edge of a flooring panel projecting above the top of the load-bearing bars.

Cut out

An area of flooring removed to permit pipes,. Plant and structural columns to pass through, or to clear obstructions.

Example for the layout area:

Divide the distance in accordance with standard panel width, this will leave a remaining width which should if possible take into account available production width. Clearance between the individual gratings is taken into account in production (approx. 2mm).

Forged Welded Gratings


Standard Width

Our process of forge welded gratings produces a standard width of 1000mm (nominal size).
Shrinkage after the welding procedure results in an actual width of approximately 998mm.

Production Dimension

Wherever possible we will make panels end at a load bar. See the table below for widths.

Forge-welded gratings in standard panels

Standard forge-welded panels are supplied 6100x1000mm (nominal size)

Production Table

Production width of forge-welded gratings has a bearing bar thickness of 5mm. Bearing bar pitch 30, 34 or 41. Gratings width = nominal size 1000mm (shrinkage approx. 2mm = 998mm). For bearing bar 3mm thickness deduct 2mm.
